Oxygen depletion monitoring systems are installed to guard personnel who need to enter rooms where either Nitrogen or Carbon Dioxide is used for Cryogenic storage.

These gases are usually used for incubators as well as storage dewars used in the storage of various tissues and cells.

Oxygen should read 21% in normal atmospheres, a drop below 18% should issue a warning clearly visible to personnel accessing the storage area.

Personnel gas detectors set to alarm at 18% are effective if the levels are dropping from 21% to 18% however a fixed gas sensor mounted inside the storage area connected back to a transmitter with a clear display will offer greater protection, preventing personnel entering a room where there are depleted levels of oxygen.

  • 14% - Reduces the ability to think , muscular co-ordination and accelerates pulse rate.
  • 14-10% - Causes increased pain threshold and heightened emotions.
  • 10-6% - Causes nausea and vomiting, and may cause permanent damage of the brain .
  • 6% - Causes convulsive movements and breathing stops.

Fixed gas sensors give a clear indication to personnel before entering the storage area. Wessex Power offers these sensors to monitor, alarm and record the data inside the storage area.

The three options are:

  1. Clear local indicator with local visual/alarm beacon
  2. Clear local indicator with centralized alarm system
  3. Clear local indicator with FDA/GAMP compliant data collection system and centralized alarm system
